18th century Cures and Remedies – An Archive Afternoon at Traquair

19th November at 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

A New Archives Workshop on 18th century Cures and Remedies

Thursday 19th November, 2pm-4pm

Following our highly successful workshops on food and drink consumed in Traquair House in the 18th century, we are now inviting you along to discover the weird and wonderful medicines family members were using to cure their various ailments. Join Catherine Maxwell Stuart, 21st Lady of Traquair, and Margaret Fox, Traquair’s archivist, to hear their short presentation and then immerse yourself in the documents to uncover for yourself medicinal preparations which have thankfully long fallen out of use – such as earthworms washed in white wine alive, the white of peacocks’ dung and the liver of a hare! You can then mull over your findings with fellow participants and enjoy a cup of tea and shortbread to round off your afternoon.

This event will be held in the Dining Room (on the ground floor).

Tickets: £25 – advance booking essential as numbers are limited.
