Historic Houses -Weddings

We were excited at Traquair to be able to organise and host a small wedding with just 6 days’ notice!  On a Thursday in September we received an email from bride, Brooke, asking if we could help. Having decided to break with her original venue due to concerns about safety Brooke contacted a number of venues based across the Scottish Borders – importantly their marriage was already registered in the SBC region so staying in this region was a must.  Our wedding planner responded ‘yes’ within a couple of hours and, most importantly for Brooke, responded with ideas, photos and a personal message. Brooke later disclosed she had chosen us because of this quick and personal response.

And so the bride, groom and one set of parents arrived with us on Monday evening and were blown away by the beauty of Traquair House. On Tuesday guests flew in from Northern Ireland and the south of England to take the wedding party to 5 households, 11 people.  Under the magical Yew Trees, Brooke and Stuart were married watched by close family and friends. Also adding an international flavour to the day, Kiwi Brooke connected by Zoom to her family in New Zealand, and the couples’ friends in Australia and Canada.  Tears and smiles were the order of the day.  The wedding group enjoyed our own sparkling wine, Cuvee Catherine, and a cold platter (one for each household) expertly prepared by our in-house chef before taking a wander around our grounds for some informal photos.  And then at 4pm they were gone!  Departing for a dinner in Edinburgh almost as quickly as they had arrived, and leaving our team smiling and exhilarated.

The couple commented afterwards (on Google) –

Gillian helped us plan our wedding here with just 6 days notice. Above and beyond is how I would describe her efforts! Nothing was too much of a problem, she jumped in to help out where it was not even expected – ie helping me with my vail, holding my phone for probably 1/2 hour so those on Zoom could watch, switch on the lights in all of our decorations beforehand. She facilitated our guests and vendors, got everyone down to the Yew trees on time, arranged delicious platters and threw in a couple bottles of champagne to top it all off. The grounds were amazing, Yew Tree circle magical, other staff all lovely, our only regret was that we had to rush off afterward. Thank you so much, we will return!
