Traquair’s Woodland Light Trail

A new woodland light trail is being launched this October as part of our Halloween events at Traquair.
For the first time ever you can wander through the woodland walk and see some stunning ancient trees lit up for the night including the ancient yew tree circle with some of the oldest trees in Scotland. You can immerse yourself in the history of these woodlands, once the hunting grounds of the kings and queens of Scotland and see fascinating projections on the Quair water, a tributary of the River Tweed.
As you emerge from the woods there will also be a chance to explore the Maze at night with added atmosphere and lighting.
The light trail is being made possible through the enthusiasm and dedication of local lighting designer Mark Phelan and is being piloted this year in the hope we can develop the event in the future.
Catherine Maxwell Stuart commented: “We have wanted to have a light trail here for several years as our woodlands are so special and the trees will look extraordinary at night but the costs have always been prohibitive. We are so excited to be able to trial a trail this year with the help of Mark and it is a chance to see how strong the demand is for this type of event in the hope it can grow in future years.”
Visitors can purchase tickets online in advance or on the night.
Arrive any time within the open period, and you can take as long as you like in the woods and the maze.
You are advised to bring good walking shoes or boots and a torch as there are areas of the woods where the paths are uneven and the lighting is minimal.
Traquair is also hosting Halloween Ghost Tours on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th October and the much-loved Halloween Fun Day on Sunday 29th October.
