Sixties Icons Set To Rock Traquair

Published 20th June 2013

Two of the most iconic bands of the 1960s – The Animals and The Troggs – are set to headline at this year’s Traquair Fair at Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July.

The bands will perform as part of a special Sixties theme for the family-friendly weekend festival which is set in the grounds of Scotland’s oldest inhabited house. In addition to an impressive line-up of Sixties music, Traquair Fair also includes a programme of children’s entertainment ranging from appearances by Sixties comic book hero Spiderman to storytelling of classic Sixties children’s books in a special Children’s Area which will celebrate the moon landings.

There will be wonderful theatrical performances and colourful street theatre as well as static and living models throughout the house showcasing some of the great designers and fashion created in the Scottish Borders at the time. The Fair also includes a special screening of Tamlin, a 1968 film located at Traquair that starred Ava Gardner, Joanna Lumley and Ian McShane.  Other archive footage from the era will also be shown.

As one of the two headline music acts of this year’s Traquair Fair, The Animals will take to the stage on Sunday 28th to perform a host of iconic numbers including House of the Rising Sun, We Gotta Get Out of this Place and Don’t Let me be Misunderstood.  Chris Britton, original founding member of The Troggs will lead his band on Saturday 27th, performing a set that includes Wild Thing, Love is all Around and Anyway You Want Me. The stage will also see performances from Sixties musician, John Renbourn, one of the founding fathers of contemporary British folk, plus new music with a Sixties influence from Glasgow band, Hidden Masters. There will also be international talent from South African acapella group Africa Antsha who won Best Live performance at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2012.

The Traquair Fair also features craft stalls, workshops and complementary therapies as well as a choice of delicious food and drink including Traquair’s own Fair Ale brewed exclusively for the weekend.

Traquair Fair organiser Catherine Maxwell Stuart said;

“The Sixties was an amazing period that featured a host of exciting cultural changes.  Our Traquair Fair will celebrate this in sensational Sixties style with a colourful programme of events that will appeal to all ages.  We’re particularly thrilled that two of the decade’s most iconic and influential bands will be attending and believe that when combined with the rest of our entertainment line-up, this year’s Traquair Fair will offer one of Scotland’s most exciting family days out.”

The Traquair Fair has again benefitted from funding from EventScotland, the national events agency, through their National Funding Programme.

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer for EventScotland said;

“Scotland is the perfect stage for events and Traquair Fair has a colourful, carnival atmosphere with entertainment ranging from live music to outdoor theatre and dance.  With such a strong programme this year, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained including great activities for children.
